Possibly Pre-Napoleonic, Other Ranks, Oblong Cross Belt Plate of the 56th Foot - West Essex Regiment
( A.SBP.04 )

British, possibly Pre-Napoleonic other ranks, oblong, cross-belt plate of the 56th Foot - West Essex Regiment. 2.3/4 in across and 3.3/4 in high, this oblong cross-belt plate is of deeply patinated/ worn brass.  The high points are rubbed/ worn to such an extent that the wording in the scrolls beneath the embossed Georgian crown and below the number "56" and the castle is illegible.  There is a hole worn into the crown and the obverse and reverse are pitted.  The rear of the slightly curved plate's retains both the top brass belt hooks, but one of the bottom brass belt hooks is now  absent. In worn (possibly excavated) condition but still a very scarce other ranks pre-Napoleonic or Peninsular War period cross-belt plate.
