Description

Circa 1900 African hunting or fishing spear/ harpoon.  Overall length approx 55 in., steel/ iron blade length 15 in. Blade of harpoon shape with a square armour piercing tip, hand cut barbs to the sides, a hand twisted tensioning portion beneath the blade, to a pleasing dark brown age patina.  Beneath the blade and socket is a dark brown sewn leather grip for approx 18 in over the original wooden shaft.  To the bottom of the shaft is a steel/ iron chisel endedand socketed  piece (presumably for driving into the ground when the spear/ harpoon was not in use.  The original wooden shaft has no worm holes and the whole in good overall condition commensurate with age.
