1796 Pat. British Infantry Officers Sword Of The George III/ Napoleonic Period In Original Leather Scabbard By Runkel, Solingen. Overall length approx. 39in, blade length approx. 32.1/2in. The steel blade is straight flat backed with fullers to both sides with a spear point, and double edged for the last 6 inches. The blade is engraved on the top with the makers name "J. J. Runkel, Solingen". To one side of the blade is the Royal Coat of Arms for George III, on the other side is a George III crown and GR cifer and scrolling foliate and martial designs to both sides. The blade is to a dark grey patina with darker grey/ black specles of "old" rust throughout. The hiltretains much of its oroiginal gilt and consists of; the rigid shell guard, knuckle bow, cross guard terminating in a rearward foliate decorated quillon, fluted urn pommel with prominent flattened ball tang. The silver wire grip is complete and in good condition. The original black leather scabbard is present but rejoined/ repaired in several places towards the bottom, and although treated with Pecard very weak. The scabbard withtooledcrowns and other decoration at the front. The scabbard retains both its throat andbottom chapes with some gilt still visible, particularly to the throat chape. Both ring suspenders and tear-drop suspension button are still present.
A good example of a fighting version of this pattern of sword, carried by British infantry officers of the line during the Napoleonic wars, and made by a famous German maker of the time, in good overall condition for its age.
