SLEEPER – WW2 M-40 German Helmet with original liner, chinstrap and remains of single decal. The helmet retains some of its original green paint and has the number *239; stamped into the inner rear lip. The liner and chinstrap are both original, but the chinstrap in particular very dry and in need of feeding with PECARD or similar. The outline of the single shield shaped decal can still be made out, but removed in compliance of the 1942 order. Age and rust throughout, but an honest and original helmet.
The story behind this helmet: The original owner farmed near a place called Mandal in Norway and in around 1943 two waggon loads of German troops arrived looking for Resistance Fighters, arms, explosives, radios, downed RAF aircrew and so on. One of the German soldiers put his helmet down on the farm table during a fruitless search that was conducted for several hours. The German troops eventually departed, but the farmer was dismayed to find this German helmet still on his kitchen table after they had gone. Scared and not really knowing what to do with it, he hid the helmet in one of the farm sheds, where it had remained until recently re-discovered by his decendents and then sold.
This M-40 German helmet is in reasonably good overall condition considering where it was been stored and, commensurate with age.
